Schlotheimia rugifolia (Hook.) Schwägr. is reported for the first time in the Oriental Republic of Uruguay. The species is characterized by dark reddish-brown plants with rugose leaves spirally arranged around the stem. Leaves are oblong to oblong-ligulate, with a short-apiculate apex and a strong costa excurrent into the mucro. The sporophytes have an exserted capsule and a campanulate calyptra, lobed at the base. Data on its distribution, habitat, and diagnostic features are provided, including a distribution map and a taxonomic key to distinguish the species of the genus occurring in the country.
