Abstract

A monographic study of the genus Schinopsis Engl. (Anacardiaceae) is given. It is exclusively found in the meridional part of South America. It consists of seven species. On the basis of further studies and collections the writers have reduced Sch. heterophylla Rag. & Cast. to synonomy, and have raised one variety to the status of species, Sch. glabra (Engl.) Barkl. & Meyer. Members of this genus are the important commercial source of tannin, and their extremely hard and durable wood has many important uses. The study includes keys, descriptions, synonomy, common names, and citations of the material consulted. It is illustrated with drawings and photographs.
