In this paper 142 of the mosses discussed by Grout (1928-40) that live in the southern regions of the United States are studied. Geographical data is added to the indicated species. A new combination is made, Bryoxyphium norvegicum var. mexicanum (Besch.) Sharp and many species are reduced to synonyms. In order to make more effective bryogeographic studies in the Americas, it is essential: 1st, that the collectors record the complete necessary data; 2nd, also is necessary the monographic study of many genres; and 3rd, make more collections.
