Abstract

The District of La Plata is in the North-Eastern part of the Buenos Aires Province, in the Argentine Republic, along the river Plate (Plata). It is an almost entirely flat country, and there are, therefore, numerous lagoons and swampy pools. Its climate is temperate warm and humid, with a mean temperature of 16,5°C and 991,7 mm of rainfall annually. It rains there in all seasons, but more frequently in autumn. Winter has commonly a dry period, and there is another in summer. As can be expected after four centuries of colonisation, the primitive vegetation of this region has been considerably modified by man?s action, the relicts of the native vegetal covering being indeed very scarce.
