Resumo

The ecology and behavior of three species, Cavia pamparum, Galea musteloides and Microcavia australis, were studied under captive and semi-natural conditions. At the same time, a population of Cavia porcellus was maintained to allow a comparative study between its behavior and that of Cavia pamparun. In the studies carried out in the field, each animal, in the analyzed area, was trapped and its sex, weight and ectoparasites determined. Its length was noted and the specimen was marked, using Nyanzol dye and cutting the fingers, to allow future identification. The observations made gave data on the dynamics of the population, reproduction, cycles of activity, territory and behavioral interactions. Galea and Microcavia are sympatric in the place of observation and the ecological relationships are under study. The two forms have similar customs and habits, eat the same plants, use the same paths, and react amicably to each other. All species studied have been bred in captivity; data on behavior when mating, during gestation and the number of offspring are recorded. Apart from the descriptions, their behavior has been filmed and systematic observations have been carried out to obtain quantitative data, determine relationships of dominance and study the behavior of young people. In some directions there are signs of evolution.
