Abstract

In the following paper carried out in the Chaco area lying to the east of Tucuman, an attempt has been made to evaluate the significance of the ant Atta vollenweideri and the role it plays in the alteration of the soil. The density of its nests have been determined and the volume and weight of soil moved per hectare. Profiles of the zonal soil and the soils altered by the workings of the ants are analised for comparison. Sterility in the affected soils is proved. In conclusion it is considered that due to the volume of soil displaced and the changes produced by material rich in calcium carbonate in the fertility of the upper horizons, the actual and past edaphie activity of these insects is of significance and have to be considered.
