Abstract

Several works are found in the literature in which the findings of agglutinating or hemolytic activity on mammalian red blood cells by blood sera from lower vertebrates are reported or cited (Gigli and Austen, 1971; Sanchez and Gajardo, 1980; Kawaguchi et al., 1980; Jurd, 1978). In each case the finding is treated as exceptional and the immunological nature of said activity is demonstrated by isolating the responsible antibodies.

The objective of this work is to find out the extent of the phenomenon and, in parallel to a work aimed at studying the hemolytic activity of the serum of Bufo paracnemis, which is discussed separately, determinations of the hemolytic and binding capacity of the serum of various species of anurans have been made of the Argentine Northwest, and the results are reported here.
