El tucán grande fue descrito formalmente en 1776 por el zoólogo, profesor universitario y traductor alemán Philipp Ludwig Statius Müller (1725–1776), quien le asignó el nombre binomial Ramphastos toco en el suplemento y registro de la obra Des Ritters Carl von Linné vollständigen Natursystems (Müller, 1776).
