Abstract

Valerianaceae of Chile include three genera: Valerianella Pollich emend. Moench, Valeriana L. and Stangea Graebn. The genus Valerianella with two species: V. olitoria L. Pollich and V. truncata Betcke. The genus Valeriana is the most numerous of the family, with 42 species. Stangea, genus represented by only one species, S. paulae Graebn. A new species is described, Valeriana chilensis n. sp.; a new name is given, Valeriana atacamensis nomen novum, and a new species is emended, Valeriana lobata Hook. et Arn. emend. The genus Valeriana is divided in two subgenera: Valeriana-Valeriana (sub-Valerianastrum Borsini) and Phyllactis (Pers. emend. Wedd) Borsini. Betckea DC and Astrephia Dufr. are considered synonymous of Valeriana L.
