Abstract

Generic classification within Equisetaceae has long been a subject of debate, with a broad concept of the genus Equisetum L. being predominantly adopted throughout the 20th century. However, recent phylogenetic studies have demonstrated marked differences among the clades traditionally recognized as Equisetum subg. Equisetum and Equisetum subg. Hippochaete (Milde) Baker, alongside the Paramochaete Christenhusz & Husby clade. To adequately reflect this divergence, a three-genus classification for the family was formalized, recognizing Equisetum L. s.s., Hippochaete Milde, and Paramochaete (Christenh. & Husby) M.Kessler. Under this three-genus scheme, species exhibiting the diagnostic morphological syndrome of Hippochaete and phylogenetically nested within this clade must be formally transferred, as is the case of Equisetum pyramidale. Therefore, the corresponding nomenclatural combination Hippochaete pyramidalis is proposed here. Furthermore, its morphological differences from  Hippochaete gigantea are detailed, as well as its distribution and habitat.
