Abstract

Achyranthes aspera L. (Amaranthaceae), a species native to the tropical Old World and currently distributed throughout tropical and subtropical regions, has been recognized as a highly aggressive invasive alien plant. This paper documents its first occurrence in Paraguay, along with a detailed taxonomic description, photographs, and considerations regarding its ecology and distribution. The species exhibits morphological and biological traits associated with efficient dispersal and high seed production. Available records suggest a progressive expansion toward southern latitudes, with southern Bolivia, northern Argentina, Paraguay, and the states of Mato Grosso do Sul and Paraná (Brazil) identified as areas of recent colonization. Its presence in Paraguay is likely due to accidental introductions, and favorable environmental conditions could lead to rapid population establishment; therefore, early monitoring in natural and productive environments is recommended.
