Of the 1200 species of lycophytes and ferns analyzed to date, 67% showed the presence of arbuscular mycorrhizas. Among them, species belonging to Anemiaceae show the highest frequency of arbuscular mycorrhization worldwide. In Argentina, seven species of Anemia are recognized, including A. australis and A. phyllitidis which occupy different ecological niches. The aim of this work is to document, characterize the morphological type, and determine the percentage of arbuscular mycorrhizal colonization in A. australis and A. phyllitidis var. phyllitidis. Root systems from five individuals per species were collected from the Horco Molle Botanical Garden (Tucumán) and were processed using conventional techniques. Both taxa evidenced arbuscular mycorrhizal colonization with Arum and Paris morphological types. The percentage of hyphal colonization was over 90 % in both species, with arbuscular colonization being significantly higher in A. phyllitidis var. phyllitidis and vesicular colonization was higher in A. australis. This could indicate the specific physiological requirements of each species, given the diverse range of habitats they occupy. Septate endophytes were detected in association with AMF. This is the first report of the presence of arbuscular mycorrhizae in A. australis and A. phyllitidis var. phyllitidis.
