Moth diversity (Lepidoptera) in a protected area of the Yungas region of Tucumán

This document studies the diversity of macrolepidoptera in the Reserva Experimental Horco Molle (REHM) and Jardín Botánico Horco Molle (JBHM), located in the piedmont of the Yungas region of Tucumán, Argentina. This protected area is characterized by marked environmental heterogeneity and the coexistence of native and exotic vegetation, result of a secondary succession process, which favors high biological diversity. Despite the region’s ecological importance, there is little information on the invertebrate fauna, particularly nocturnal lepidoptera. In research for this paper, systematic sampling was conducted between the years 2017 and 2018 using light traps placed in four sites with different vegetation composition. The collected specimens were photographed, preserved, and identified using taxonomic keys, specialized literature, and comparison with reference collections. A significant species richness was recorded, distributed across six families, with a total of 77 species, with Geometridae (31) and Erebidae (26) standing out as the most representative, followed by Noctuidae (11), Sphingidae (5), Saturniidae (3), and Notodontidae (1). The results show that moth diversity in the area exceeds by far previous records, highlighting the value of the REHM and the JBHM as reservoirs of biodiversity in a peri-urban setting. Moths comply with vital ecological functions, such as nocturnal pollination and their role in food webs. In this context, the study underscores the need to expand entomological surveys in protected areas in order to improve our understanding of biodiversity and contribute to the design of conservation strategies.
