Abstract

The Anacardiaceae fossil record of Late Cenozoic from Northeastern Argen- tina. The Anacardiaceae were an important component of Late Cenozoic from Northeastern Argentina and consist mainly of petrified woods, leaf impressions and palynomorphs. The materials come from the Paraná Formation (Upper Miocene), Ituzaingó Formation, “Salto Chico” (Pliocene-Pleistocene) and El Palmar Formation (Upper Pleistocene) in the Corrientes and Entre Ríos provinces. The aim of this contribution is to provide information about the fossil record of Anacardiaceae. The botanical affinities are analyzed and paleoecological, paleoclimat- ical and paleophytogeographic relationships are discussed. The data suggest that in the Late Cenozoic Anacardiaceae were linked to a warm climate, with trees and shrubs adapted to xeric conditions and seasonality and that some taxa were exceptionally adapted to humid conditions associated with riparian forests
