El complemento es un componente de la inmunidad de muchos organismos y con diferentes vías de activación. El objetivo de este trabajo fue comprobar el efecto de plantas comerciales de uso medicinal sobre la actividad in vitro del sistema de complemento de suero de conejo inmunizado con eritrocitos de otra especie de mamífero. De un total de 26 plantas analizadas, 13 mostraron un efecto claramente inhibitorio del sistema de complemento, 2 no tuvieron diferencia con el control y 11 mostraron un efecto amplificador de la actividad del sistema del complemento. El tratamiento con calor del suero inmune de conejo inhibe la actividad del complemento sin afectar la actividad aglutinante sobre los glóbulos rojos incluso en una dilución de 1/64, lo que indica la presencia de anticuerpos anti-glóbulos rojos humanos
